Hold on: Brittany Howard says the door is not closed for a potential Alabama Shakes reunion.

The Grammy-winning rock band has been on hiatus since 2018, and frontwoman and guitarist Howard has since released two celebrated solo albums: 2019's Jaime and 2024's What Now. What does the future hold for the group? And is Howard tired of being asked about it?

"I'm not tired of being asked about it," Howard tells Entertainment Weekly while promoting her Netflix animated film Thelma the Unicorn, out now. "It is a beautiful part of my history as a musician [and] changed my life. I love the music we made together. I was just listening to 'Always Alright'; I haven't heard it in 10 years."

"As far as what happens in the future," she adds, "I just follow the curiosity. I feel like if there's a beat there and the creativity's calling me there, then that's something that we'll have a conversation about, me and the guys. I wouldn't say the door's completely closed."

Formed in 2009 in Athens, Ala., the band — also comprised of guitarist Heath Fogg, bassist Zac Cockrell, and drummer Steve Johnson — released their debut album Boys & Girls in 2012, an instant sensation that garnered the group their first Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist. It was followed by the acclaimed Sound & Color in 2015, their last album together.

"It's important to go where your heart tells you," Howard previously told podcast host Tom Power of stepping away from the band earlier this year. "And never feel like you're trapped into something, especially as a creative person... I had to follow, I guess you would call it, the muse. I had to follow where it was coming from, and it was just away from that. I had to do it."

For now, Howard, whose music has soundtracked many films and shows, makes her acting debut in Jared and Jerusha Hess' Thelma the Unicorn, adapted from Aaron Blabey’s children’s books of the same name. The positive experience has since piqued her interest in pursuing more acting roles. "I always follow my curiosity,” she tells EW.
