Broad Street cordoned off after major blaze

A major blaze erupted above a late night takeaway in Birmingham city centre. Around 40 firefighters were sent to the scene after flames grew and smoke billows above on Broad Street.

The fire started above the Pit Stop fast food restaurant, at 6pm today, Tuesday, April 16. Eight fire crews were called at the scene and used hose reel water jets.

The aerial platform was also in attendance. West Midlands Police cordoned off the scene as the firefighters made the area safe. No-one was injured.

Midland Metro services were halted between between Library at Centenary Square and Edgbaston Village. Trams were only operating between Wolverhampton Station and the Library.

A fire service spokeswoman told BirminghamLive: "We sent eight crews to Broad Street after we were called following a fire in the roof to a two-storey property at 6.03pm tonight. The aerial platform was also in attendance. There are no reports of any injuries."
