Bromley regulars ‘heartbroken’ over ‘friendly and welcoming’ Picturehouse closure

A cherished vintage cinema in Bromley has announced it will be closing its doors for good - leaving passionate filmgoers deeply disappointed and sharing their thoughts and favourite memories about the venue.

Bromley Picturehouse has announced that it will close on August 1.

This beloved venue, known for its striking Art Deco architecture, has been a fixture in the community for generations, echoing the golden years of cinema in the 1920s and 30s.

The original building dates from 1936, representing the art deco style of famed architect George Coles.

No reason has been given for the closure, but the announcement has sparked a wave of reactions from the local community.

A spokesperson for Bromley Picturehouse shared the news on Facebook and X: “We're very sorry to announce that we've made the tough decision to close Bromley Picturehouse from Thu 1 Aug. Between now and then, you can continue to enjoy all we have to offer – we hope to see you in the cinema soon. If you're a Member, we'll be in touch in due course.”

The announcement prompted many heartfelt responses from patrons who have cherished memories of the cinema.

On X, @Beatlesjimbo commented, “A real shame this, but not surprised when the Vue cinema in Bromley was generally a lot cheaper.

“ While I far prefer Picturehouse, money is tight for a lot of people and so they'll go where the cheaper options are. Sad to see you go, and hope the staff are being looked after.”

Another user, @Monaldo86, expressed: “Oh no, this is terrible news. Although we live on the opposite end of London my dog and I loved coming down for the dog-friendly screenings and the staff there were always the friendliest and most welcoming of all Picturehouses.

“What can be done to #saveBromleyPH @picturehouses.”

@Charlotte_Lyne added: “Thank you for everything - the quiz nights, the film nights, the wonderful, wonderful bar with the lovely, lovely people.

“I can't believe that this won't be part of our life anymore.”

In response to the closure news, a petition has been launched to try and save Bromley Picturehouse, gaining support from many loyal patrons.

A comment on Facebook reads: “There’s a save the Picturehouse Facebook group and petition to sign. This really is sad news as I love this place.”

One Facebook user shared their sorrow: “Such incredibly sad news. We have been loyal supporters of Bromley PH since it opened in 2019 and in fact have just renewed our membership. The art deco building is quite beautiful and all the staff unfailingly polite and friendly.

“There seemed to be a full programme of events going on and we were looking forward to catching up with some 80s favourites in August. East Dulwich PH is run-down and tired and nowhere near the standard of Bromley.

“If we are to be candid, we think effectively closing the kitchen by limiting the menu to toasties was a big mistake - as was scaling down the fabulous menu that was in place when it opened. We frequently ate there pre-film with groups of friends.

“If there is any possibility that this stunning art deco cinema can be kept alive in some shape or form we, as founder members, would stand firmly behind such plans. This is a sad day for us as we are now cinematically homeless.”

Another added: “I am literally heartbroken. My last reason to travel into Bromley will be gone. This town is a wreck in so many ways and this is just adding to the wreckage.”
