Bromley's Pixie Lott kicks off Race for Life season with surprise concert

Bromley pop icon Pixie Lott has surprised fans with a special performance to launch the 2024 Race for Life season.

Her surprise 'Life Lounge' gig took place at Battersea Power Station, close to the first ever Race for Life event held by Cancer Research UK in 1994.

Known for her hit songs 'Boys and Girls' and 'All About Tonight', Pixie sung classic numbers, as well as introducing new singles 'Midnight Trash' and 'Coco Chanel'.

The performance was part of a campaign called #PlaysForLife where participants are invited to add songs to a motivational playlist.

This initiative came out of research finding that 92 per cent of UK adults listen to music for exercise motivation.

Cancer Research hopes the playlist will inspire people to participate in their local Race for Life event and raise funds for crucial life-saving cancer research.

The campaign also invites people to share their emotional connection to the songs they add.

Pixie Lott added Harry Nilsson's 'Everybody's Talkin’' to the playlist, revealing that the song holds a special significance for her family.

The Bromley singer-songwriter said: "Every time I hear Everybody’s Talkin’ I think of my Nan.

"I love that it is an emotional song, but that it has a positive feel, that’s why I thought it would be a great addition to the playlist."

She added: "So many of the important moments in my life have a particular song linked to them, evoking a memory which takes me straight back."

Pixie Lott said she was excited to contribute to the playlist and play a role in promoting Race for Life, an event helping to fund life-saving cancer research.

The research commissioned by Race for Life revealed that 81 per cent of people listen to playlists while exercising, while more than half of them (55 per cent) create their own.

Gareth Mulcahy, head of events and sports for Cancer Research UK said: "It's remarkable to witness the nation continue to come together to support Race for Life.

"Together, we’ve raised over £970 million in support for our life-saving cancer research – helping 130,000+ people with cancer in the UK every year. "

Cancer Research, with the help of their event Race for Life, is aiming to increase the number of people surviving cancer.

Current figures show that half of the people in the UK diagnosed with cancer will survive their disease for 10 years or more.
