Brothers Among 4 Teens Dead After Early Morning Wisconsin Crash: 'So Much Left to Accomplish'

Two brothers were among four teenagers killed in a Wisconsin crash over Memorial Day weekend.

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release on Facebook that their agency responded to a fatal motor vehicle crash on State Highway 16/60 at the intersection of County Road TT in Elba around 4 a.m. local time on Monday, May 27.

"Initial investigation showed that a 2000 Ford F150 was traveling north on County Highway TT when it failed to stop at the stop sign on County Highway TT at State Highway 16/60," the sheriff's office said in a release.

That's when authorities say a 2017 Western Star Semi without a trailer struck the Ford F150 as it headed east.

Three teens were pronounced dead at the scene, and another died at the hospital, according to the department. The victims include driver Luis Gamillo, 19, and his brother Erik Gamillo Calzada, 17. Alix Hernandez, 18, and Ivan Herrera, 16, were also identified as victims.

Joseline Herrera, 18, remained hospitalized with serious injuries, the sheriff's office said. The driver of the semi was treated and released from an area hospital.

A GoFundMe fundraiser was created by a cousin of Luis and Erik to help cover funeral expenses.

"My cousins [were] responsible, caring, and the [funniest] souls in the world," the organizer said. "They [were] loved by those around them and always made sure they brought positivity to wherever they went. They [were] taken from our sides way too soon and with so much left to accomplish."

Another GoFundMe campaign was launched to help cover the funeral expenses for Alix, who was remembered as a "beloved daughter." Both tributes have raised over $30,000 as of the afternoon of May 29.

Two Dane County school districts shared statements identifying the teens as former and current students, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Sun Prairie East and La Follette high schools will have counselors and social workers available for students throughout the week, Lake Geneva Regional News reported.

“This loss will surely raise many emotions, concerns, and questions for our entire school district, especially our students,” Sun Prairie Superintendent Brad Saron and East High School Principal Renee Coleman told families in an email Monday night, per the paper. “The death of a young person is always a sad and troubling event and can often have a profound effect on the student’s friends and classmates.”

In a statement obtained by PEOPLE, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation said they are "
deeply saddened by news of the crash at WIS 16/WIS 60 at County TT in Dodge County."

"We express condolences to the loved ones of those who lost their lives. Safety is our department’s top priority and any life lost on Wisconsin roads is unacceptable," they added. "We will continue to work with local governments on safety countermeasures to make roads safer."
