‘The Brothers Sun’ Trailer: Michelle Yeoh Is a Criminal Matriarch in Netflix Action Series

Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh is returning to her action star roots.

The “Everything Everywhere All at Once” Academy Award winner stars in Netflix series “The Brothers Sun,” created by Brad Falchuk and Byron Wu. The series centers on the Sun family, which runs a powerful Taiwanese triad. After the death of the patriarch shot by a mysterious assassin, the eldest Sun son Charles “Chairleg” Sun (Justin Chien) — a revered assassin in his own rite — returns to Los Angeles to protect his mother Eileen (Yeoh) and his naive younger brother Bruce (Sam Song Li).

The only more dangerous twist? The Suns have no idea they’re involved in organized crime. Per the official synopsis, “as Taipei’s deadliest societies and a new rising faction go head-to-head for dominance, Charles, Bruce, and their mother must heal the wounds caused by their separation and figure out what brotherhood and family truly mean before one of their countless enemies kills them all.”

Highdee Kuan and Joon Lee also star, along with Johnny Kou, Alice Hewkin, Jon Xue Zhang, Jenny Yang, Madison Hu, and Rodney To. Series co-creators Falchuk and Wu executive produce along with Kevin Tancharoen and Mikkel Bondesen.

Since winning the Oscar, Yeoh has appeared in Disney+ series “American Born Chinese” and Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of “A Haunting in Venice,” plus the Paramount+ “Star Trek” movie, “Section 31.”

Yeoh previously spoke out about how the roles she’s offered have changed since winning the Academy Award.

“The best thing that has happened is I receive a script that doesn’t describe the character as a Chinese or Asian-looking person,” Yeoh told Variety. “We are actors. We are supposed to act. We are supposed to step into roles that are given to us and do our job as best we can. That, for me, is the biggest step forward.”

She added, “When there’s so few roles in the past it’s so competitive. If you get the job, I don’t get the job. But now we have to change the mindset. If I’m successful, you can be successful.”

“The Brothers Sun” premieres January 4 on Netflix. Check out the trailer below.
