Newcastle United's latest appointment could see Liverpool take advantage in the transfer market.

The Reds are yet to make any new signings this summer ahead of Arne Slot's first season as head coach. Slot was appointed earlier this year as Jurgen Klopp's successor and will take charge of pre-season training at the AXA Training Centre later this month.

Despite no new arrivals to the Liverpool squad, there have been plenty of rumours surrounding potential new additions in the transfer market. One such player to be linked with the Reds is Bruno Guimaraes.

The Brazilian is currently with his country at the Copa America and is in the same squad as Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker. Guimaraes has been heavily linked with a move away from Newcastle this summer, with Manchester City also supposedly interested in signing the midfielder.

On Wednesday it was confirmed that Newcastle had appointed Paul Mitchell as their new sporting director. Mitchell was previously linked with taking on the same role at Liverpool following the departure of Julian Ward last year, with the Reds recently appointing Richard Hughes with Ward now working in a role at Fenway Sports Group (FSG).

Newcastle moved to appoint Mitchell after Dan Ashworth completed a switch to Manchester United earlier this week. The previous sporting director was tasked with ensuring the Magpies were complying with the Profit & Sustainability Rules (PSR) ahead of the June 30 deadline.

Thanks to the sales of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, Newcastle were able to comply with the financial rules. However, there are continued rumours that move players may need to leave St James' Park this summer.

This speculation includes the future of Guimaraes, with Mitchell now responsible for either agreeing a new contract or a transfer away from Newcastle in the weeks or months ahead. As a result, Liverpool may be wise to keep an eye on the situation at Newcastle and be ready to swoop in if the possibility of signing Guimaraes becomes a realistic possibility, provided the interest is genuine.
