Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum David Boreanaz has given his opinion on the most important question for any viewer... who was the right man for Buffy – Angel or Spike?

The debate, which has raged among fans ever since the show first aired, was resurrected in recent months after US politician Stacey Abrams weighed in.

Last month, Abrams tweeted: "To be fair, Angel was the right boyfriend for Buffy coming into her power. Spike was the right man to be with as she became the power."

Now, speaking to The Wrap, Boreanaz (who, of course, played Angel) has given his verdict – and unsurprisingly, he's sticking by his character.

"All I'll say is this, man: True love is first love and first love is true love. Drop the mic. End of story," he said.

"I don't think we need to continue. I mean, it's pretty simple, right? Let's think about that for really a second. Your first love is your true love, your true love is your first love. End of story."

Boreanaz then added: "All due respect, Stacey Abrams, I disagree. But you know, hey, you're coming from the character's mouth here. I think I'll be the final word on it."

Previously, Alyson Hannigan, who played Willow, gave her verdict – choosing her character over both of Buffy's vampire suitors.

"Actually Buffy should have dated Willow," Hannigan tweeted last month.
