Burger King plans to open new Surrey town centre restaurant in former Starbucks café
A new Burger King could soon open in a Surrey town centre after plans for the restaurant were submitted to Spelthorne Borough Council. This relates to a unit on Staines High Street that was previously home to Starbucks.
An application was received on behalf of the fast food giant in April that would add to the food and retail options in the area, if approved. The proposal shows plans for the iconic Burger King name to be mounted on the shop front alongside the brand’s bun logo.
It also shows plans for Burger King’s recognisable vintage cedar wood finish cladding, a “Flame Grilling Since 1854” vinyl sign above the door, and a projecting logo sign hung at a right angle to the high street. All of these signs - excluding the vinyl - will be internally illuminated.

The sign displaying the Burger King name will be four metres wide and made to an opal acrylic finish. The letters will be individually cut out and match the brand’s existing font. The shop’s vinyl signage will be reverse cut and mounted to the inside of the glass to avoid the effects of weathering.
Documents in the application say: “The application relates to no 68 High Street, which is a vacant unit, previously occupied by Starbucks.” They add: “The application building is a mid-terrace unit, which includes the subject commercial unit at ground floor level with ancillary space at first floor.”
The plans for a new fast food joint in Staines come as rivals at McDonald’s and KFC have submitted plans for new restaurants across the county in Leatherhead and Brooklands respectively. There is currently a Burger King two miles from the proposed new restaurant off the Engham Bypass (TW20 9AZ). Burger King has been contacted for details on a possible planned opening date. The new restaurant would be at 68 High Street, Staines-upon-Thames, TW18 4DY.
It comes as there are also plans to open a new McDonalds in Leatherhead. Elsewhere, developers in Farnham have confirmed Nando’s as the next tenant at Brightwells Yard alongside 24-hour gym, Jetts. The new fitness suite and PERi-PERi chicken restaurant will join REEL cinema - already at the site - and be followed by Coppa Club once restoration of the Brightwells House is complete.
