A water main has burst in a Sunderland street with Northumbrian Water now carrying out emergency repairs.

Facebook users warned of a 'flooded road' opposite the Tesco on Newcastle Road, Fulwell.

The road has been partially closed while workers carry out repairs, although water supplies have not been affected.

A spokesperson for Northumbrian Water said: “We had a burst on a water main on Newcastle Road in Sunderland earlier this evening. Our teams attended quickly to isolate the burst and are currently on site carrying out repairs as quickly as possible.

"No customer water supplies have been impacted. A lane closure is currently in place to allow the team to carry out the repairs safely. We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and would like to thank residents for their patience."

One Facebook user put out a warning to drivers, saying: "Please be careful when you drive towards Tesco on Newcastle Road as the water pipe has burst in front of a house and the whole area around traffic lights near McDonalds is critically flooded."

Another said: "Some rainstorm that must have been in Sunderland. The drains have burst and the pavement has water running out of it, on Newcastle Road opposite Tesco."
