CAA Reveals 2024 Moebius Film Festival Dates; Ninth Annual Student Showcase Expands To Ireland & UK

Creative Artists Agency (CAA) announced the dates for the Moebius Film Festival, an annual two-day screening series showcasing graduate student filmmakers. The festival will take place May 30-31, 2024.

This year’s event features an expanded portfolio of participating schools, including the festival’s first international-based institutions, the Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT) in Dublin, Ireland and the National Film and Television School (NFTS) in Beaconsfield, England, along with New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts joining the program.

The ninth edition of the Moebius Film Festival will feature 10 short films curated from more than 130 submissions, including live-action, animated, and foreign language entries, all with a wide range of perspectives and highlighting its commitment to embracing cultural and artistic diversity.

Conceived by then-trainees and now CAA Motion Picture agents Christina Chou, Zach Kaplan, and Pete Stein, as well as Lingie Park, Moebius is organized by a team of young leaders across the agency, including Annie Buckley, Josie Bullen, Connie Deng, Casey Fraser, Max Geschwind, Edward Lau, Jessica Lee, Jack Spencer, and Saundarya Thapa.

“Each year, Moebius serves as a platform to amplify new voices in filmmaking from around the world. We are excited to welcome our new international partners, further enriching the diverse tapestry of stories that define the spirit of the festival,” said Chou, Kaplan, and Stein in a joint statement.

Below is the full slate of films:

Day 1 – Thursday, May 30 

We Met At Camp directed by MC Plaschke (AFI) 
Hayden, a new camper, tries to convince the girls in her bunk that her fake crush on the boys’ counselor isn’t fake at all. Meanwhile, her counselor Alison makes her feel special in ways she doesn’t quite understand.

How To Skin A Cheetah directed by Meghan O’Shaughnessy (IADT) 
Bobby’s tales of hunting game on the plains of Tanzania awaken a sinister side in her pampered co-worker Lucas.

Bug Diner directed by Phoebe Jane Hart (CalArts)  
A dissatisfied marriage, a secret crush, and workplace fantasies converge in a diner run by a surprisingly attractive mole.

Deep Into The Forest directed by Xinhao “Violet” Lu (AFI) 
A talented orienteering athlete faces an unexpected decision as he deals with a foot injury and the pressure from everyone to compete in a national competition.

Punter directed by Jason Adam Maselle (NYU) 
Young Brett must navigate the underbelly of the Johannesburg gambling world as a seemingly harmless horse-racing bet jeopardizes the surprise he’s prepared for this father’s birthday.

Day 2 – Friday, May 31  

Some Kind of Paradise directed by Nicholas Finegan (AFI) 
When a reclusive barman connects with a charismatic Hollywood actor online, the intensity of their connection pushes him to question the isolated life he has built for himself.  The film has been selected to screen at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.

Escape Artist directed by Kieran Barker (USC) 
Kubus Bots traverse the galaxy pillaging civilizations of their creative energy, but interacting with the Artos civilization they discover they can’t capture or control everyone…

Xiaohui and HIs Cows directed by Xinying Lao (NYU) 
Xiaohui, a nine-year-old boy living with his grandfather in a village in Southwest China, faces a dilemma. With his parents working far away, his grandfather’s cow business supports the family. When his grandfather decides to sell the calf, Xiaohui, determined to keep it, tries every possible way to hide the calf and its mother in the mountains.

Dragfox directed by Lisa Ott (NFTS) 
Amidst a daring chase for a stolen dress, a young child’s journey of self-discovery unfolds in a magical attic encounter with a fabulous drag performing fox, leading to a poignant realization about embracing one’s true identity.

Fishmonger directed by Neil Ferron (AFI) 
In this supernatural dark comedy, a pathetic Irish fishmonger must survive a sex pact with an ancient fish creature in order to save his mother’s soul from burning in hell.
