Call the Midwife star Helen George has revealed that she opted to give birth via C-section for a number of reasons, including a number of "horror stories" she had heard while working on the show.

The actress, who plays Trixie Franklin on the hit BBC One show, told Radio Times that she supports everyone's decision in terms of what's right for them. In her case, during her pregnancy Helen was diagnosed with a liver condition that's linked to an increased risk of premature birth and in some cases, an increased risk of stillbirth.

"I chose to have a C-section," she said. "It coincided with the fact that I had to deliver her early, but even without that, I would have gone for an elective caesarean because of what I'd learnt on Call the Midwife.

"Working on Call the Midwife means that lots of people tell you their horror stories about birth.

"I'm not against natural birth, I'm pro whatever you feel is right for you. Some people may not understand why I elected to have a C-section, but it was right for me at the time.

"It's not because I'm 'too posh to push', it's about what I think my body is capable of."

The actress welcomed her first child with Call the Midwife co-star Jack Ashton in October, and will be absent from a few episodes of the upcoming series seven.

We don't know how the character's temporary absence will be explained yet – we're just going to have to wait and see how Trixie's storyline plays out on screen.

Call the Midwife willreturn to BBC One on Sunday, January 21 at 8pm.
