Callum O'Hare send off and 'main problem' Doug King must solve in Coventry City transfer window

With Coventry City’s season about to draw to a close, Sky Blues fans are already thinking about the summer recruitment drive and where Mark Robins is looking to strengthen his side to go again next term.

The team have one more game to go, a Legends Day clash with 17th placed Queens Park Rangers at the CBS Arena, after which it will be time to take stock and replenish the squad. Although there’s not expected to be such a big turnover as last summer, several players will inevitably be leaving and new ones brought in as City look to improve and be better equipped for a promotion push in 2024/25.

Sky Blues reporter Andy Turner answers some of your big questions in his weekly CoventryLive Q&A...

Do you agree midfield is our main problem?

AT: Not really. I think the team need to be tighter at the back, having only kept 12 clean sheets and conceded far too many silly goals. I appreciate it’s not always the fault of the defenders and that it’s a collective responsibility, but aside from Milan, Bobby T and Bidders, the defence hasn’t been good enough on a consistent basis. I think the goalkeeper position also needs looking at.

We’ve leaked far too many goals this season to have any real hope of long term success. Where do you think the focus needs to be, new goalkeeper, beefed up defence or both?

AT: I agree and feel both goalkeeper and defence needs strengthening this summer. Not enough clean sheets (12 compared to 22 last season) shows the club have gone backwards in that department. The positive, however, is that City have scored more goals.

Do you know who our kit supplier will be next season? Hope it’s Hummel again.

AT: It is Hummel. The club signed a new three year deal last year (Feb ‘23).

Mistakes were made last summer in lack of recruitment.. you get what you put in.

AT: Yeah, it’s been no secret that City have come up short this season due to a lack of strength in depth, and Mark Robins is well aware of that and even foresaw problems. That message will almost certainly be passed on to Doug King and hopefully the situation will be addressed in the forthcoming summer window.

I want to know what progress is being made to secure our tenancy of the CBS Arena. I know it’s boring compared to comings/goings, but I believe it really is crucial to get the future sorted....

AT: The club agreed a new five year deal last April and I don’t expect much to change any time soon.

The defending has been comical at times all season! I appreciate the lack of fit players currently, but we need to vastly improve. I’m sure MR knows what needs to be done in the summer, but will DK back him? We were left short in January, IMO contributing to our disappointing finish.

AT: Well, DK is ambitious and demanded three play-off campaigns out of five so needs to put his money where his mouth is. I’m sure he’s on the same page as MR and they’ll know what needs to be done to take things to the next level.

If the squad size has been too small this season at 23 players, including 3 goalies, what do you think the squad size should be next season?

AT: 25 for senior players, including two senior keepers. You can have under-21s as back-up. The key point is that they need to be 25 quality players who can all contribute and compete to a high level over the course of the season.

Has it been confirmed that Callum O’Hare is leaving the club? Everyone is presuming it, just wondered if it is official. Be good to give him a bit of a send of on Saturday.

AT: No, it hasn’t been confirmed he’s leaving; and yes, it would be good to give him a decent send off. As disappointing as the prospect of losing him is, he has been a terrific player for the Sky Blues and we should recognise that and respect his decision.

Most teams seem to settle on a solid formation and a settled team in defence. We seem to have chopped and changed too much. Personally, I would like to see Binks stay and become established, and strengthen the goalkeeper as I am not convinced about Collins. What do you think? I also think losing O’Hare will not be a bad thing. He’s already made his mind up, so let's wish him well and move on. How about Morgan Whittaker from Plymouth as a replacement?

AT: I certainly think the club will be looking for a new goalkeeper to come in and compete for the No 1 spot, and Morgan Whittaker would be a terrific signing. However, after scoring 20 goals for Plymouth this season I am sure he will be much sought after and cost a fortune.
