Calvin Harris Insists His New Song Is About Safeway - Not Taylor Swift

On Friday, Calvin Harris sent us all into a bit of a tizzy when he released his new track ‘My Way’, with many believing that the DJ had “pulled a Taylor Swift” and written a diss track about his ex-girlfriend, erm, Taylor Swift.

However, the Scottish star has now insisted that it isn’t about TayTay at all, it’s about Safeway… Yes, that old supermarket chain that shut down here in the UK a few years back.

Before we go any further, the ‘controversial’ lyrics of Calv’s track consist of gems such as: “You were the one thing in my way” and “Why wait to say at least I did it my way/ lie awake two-faced but in my heart, I understand/ I made my move and it was all about you/ Now I feel so far removed”.

What’s that got to do with Safeway, we hear you ask? Well, Calvin says that it’s about his decision to quit his dead-end job at the chain.

Hmm.

Speaking in an interview on Elvis Duran and The Morning Show, he shared: “It’s breaking out of a situation. I thought of the concept years ago, when I left Safeway.

Not Taylor Swift.
Not Taylor Swift.

“I was trying to move to London and I was working in the store in Scotland. I was trying to go on and make music for a living but I couldn’t because I didn’t have any money. I was like ‘Damn this grocery store! If I could break out of this I could have enough time to work on music and get good.’

“It’s hard to get a job in my town. You get brainwashed into thinking that’s as good as you’re going to get, and then you have to realize that actually there’s a whole world out there.

“When you’re stuck in that situation, you can’t see that. You don’t think that you’re going to become anything! That was just the concept that was in the back of my mind, but I had no idea how to put that into words until very recently.”

Calvin went on to add that writing about his relationships isn’t “his vibe”, continuing: “I’m not an autobiographical singer. I’m very vague with my messages.

“I don’t think they’re any less powerful, but there are less words in them, and I don’t think over the course of an album it would really make sense with me as an artist.”

We have to admit, the timing of Calvin’s ‘My Way’ release does raise an eyebrow or two, but it looks like the star is adamant that the track has nothing to do with his former girlfriend.
