Cambuslang Rangers still need a 'small miracle' even with vital win

Cambuslang Rangers boss Paul McColl admits his side still need a ‘small miracle’ to stay in the West of Scotland First Division – but at least they have a chance.

A 4-1 win over 13th-placed Maybole on Saturday gives Cambuslang hope.

But the Lanarkshire side must beat sixth-placed Petershill in their final game on Friday night and hope that Maybole don’t take anything from games against promotion-chasing Johnstone Burgh [last night] and leaders Drumchapel United on Friday.

That would see Cambuslang leap-frog their rivals by a point, dropping them into the third relegation slot, but would then face a sweat as Maybole travel to Rutherglen Glencairn in their final game on May 18.

McColl said: “We had to win. If we didn’t win, that was us. We’re not daft, we know we need a small miracle – we need Maybole not to win any of their three games.

“It could actually come down to goal difference, if they lose two and draw one, but concede a few goals.

“But we would rather we win on Friday and they don’t win any of their games, and if that’s the case, we stay up.

“No matter what, we need to win on Friday and take it from there.

“Are they going to win their three games? They’ve got Johnstone Burgh who are on a roll and can win the league as well, Drumchapel who definitely can win the league, maybe against Maybole this week.

“They’ve then got Glencairn, who are a decent side, who will hopefully not want to go out on a whimper and not play a full team.

“It will be interesting, but we need to win on Friday, that’s the main thing.

“We just need to concentrate on that. It’s not an easy one, because Petershill are right up there. But if we play like we did on Saturday it gives us a chance.

“Football is all about highs and lows. We can be high just now, and hopefully we get a result against Peasy, but if Maybole win any of their games that’s it, it’s done.”

Saturday’s game came via a Godson Nechi hat-trick, with Carlos Lyon bagging the other goal in what was an impressive win.

McColl said: “We played really well, just one of those days when everything went right, when for most of the season it hasn’t. We deserved to win.

“Maybole are a decent enough team, they have good players, but I don’t think they could cope with our two boys up front, Nechi and Lyon, who just absolutely destroyed them.

“Nechi, at 17, was outstanding, they couldn’t get near him. We hit the ball over the top and he was marching onto it, so it was a good win.”
