CAMRA Kernow has crowned a new ‘pub of the season’ as its new awards system returns for a second year.

After crowning its 2023/24 Pub of the Year last month CAMRA has now reset for a new year of seasonal winners.

The 2023/24 awards saw the introduction of seasonal winners for the first time.

The Cornish branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has now announced its new ‘spring pub of the season’ for 2024/25.

The title has gone to The Old Ale House in Truro, which won the vote at a recent branch meeting ahead of seven other nominees.

It now becomes the first pub to go into the final for the Cornwall CAMRA Pub of the Year 2025.

The nominated pubs were judged on a variety of qualities including:

  • Quality of real ale/cider

  • Style/décor/furnishings/cleanliness

  • Service/welcome/offering

  • Community focus and atmosphere

  • Alignment with CAMRA principles

A spokesperson for CAMRA Kernow said: “The Old Ale House is a deserving winner as they serve a fantastic range of real ales and ciders, always kept in great condition.

“As well as this, drinkers are kept entertained with theme nights, comedy/magic shows, as well as a huge range of live music.”

The pub is due to be presented its award next weekend.

Real ale is defined by CAMRA as beer served in traditional fashion, i.e. with no extraneous CO2 in contact with the beer to pressurise it or to drive it into the glass. Nor will it have been filtered, pasteurised, or otherwise had natural live yeast removed before point of sale.

Last month CAMRA crowned its Pub of the Year for 2023/24.

The Cornwall Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale said it was “delighted” to make the presentation to the Hole in the Wall, Bodmin.

In addition to being named Pub of the Year, it also received its certificate for winning Cornish Pub of the Season (Winter).

Runner up in the competition was Blisland Inn, also in Bodmin, which was also the autumn seasonal winner, with Driftwood Spars at St Agnes named last summer’s season winner.
