An independent-run canalside café in Coventry has now reopened for business. Playwrights Café at the Canal Basin suddenly closed in January and was listed as 'temporarily closed' on Google.

Now diners don't have to fear as the café has announced it is now open fully from yesterday (May 7). The eatery opened for a couple of hours over the Bank Holiday weekend from 9am-1pm before reverting back to normal hours.

Playwrights Café offers breakfast and lunch alongside the tranquil Canal Basin. It has developed a reputation for delicious food and a variety of vegan choices since launching in August 2020. Many high-profile people have visited from former world snooker champion Steve Davis, and The Specials singer Neville Staple.

The team at Playwrights Café wrote on Facebook on April 30: "See you next week! Unless you’re around this weekend, as we’ll be having a little warm-up for a few hours on Saturday and Sunday 9am-1pm. Our diary is now open for bookings, and we cannot wait to see you all."

Many locals were excited that the café is back open. Gill Roberts said: "Best news today. Welcome back Playwrights, you have been missed." Jemma Proctor added: Yay so excited to come back, wishing you good luck for the first few days opening."

The café has a 5-star rating on Tripadvisor. Out of the 30 reviews, 29 were rated 'excellent', with one 'very good review'. The eatery also has a 4.8-star rating on Google reviews out of 237 reviews.

Sheridan Parsons said: "The Playwrights is a lovely little café with brilliant views and plenty of outdoor seating overlooking the Coventry Canal Basin. It has great coffee, well-cooked food, and excellent service from experienced waiting staff, who really seem to care.

"We were especially impressed by the vegan selection on the menu, and some of the little touches of detail, such as homemade coleslaw, and a choice of tomatoes (roast or plum)."

Clare, who visited in October, added: "Perfect from start to finish! The setting is gorgeous on the end of the canal, with canoes going past. Super friendly staff and very attentive. All food is cooked fresh, so hot when it arrives. Everything was high quality on my plate (I had the jumbo breakfast) and very tasty! Felt guilty not eating it all."

Location of Playwrights Café: Unit 12 Coventry Canal Basin, St Nicholas St, Coventry CV1 4LY. Opening times: 8:30am-3pm Tuesday to Friday, 8:30am-4pm Saturday and 9am-3pm Sunday.
