Tens of Thousands of Canary Islanders Take to Streets for Historic Anti-Mass Tourism Rally

Residents of the Canary Islands took to the streets on Saturday, April 20, in a historic rally against the surge of mass tourism, under the motto of “Canarias tiene un limite,” which translates to “the Canary Islands have a limit”.

The rally, convened across the islands by the platform Canarias Se Agota, called for a moratorium on authorizing new hotels and vacation homes, implementation of an eco-tax, and regulation of housing purchases by foreigners.

Footage captured by local Jose Manuel G Jurado shows protesters in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the capital of the islands, on Saturday.

The Canary Islands government reported 56,000 attendees, while the organising platform claimed 130,000 in Tenerife and Gran Canaria alone. Credit: Jose Manuel G Jurado via Storyful
