Cannons Salute Kick Off of Tampa's Annual Pirate Festival

People dressed as pirates joined the Gasparilla Pirate Fest in Tampa, Florida, on Saturday, January 28.

Local news outlets reported an estimated 300,000 people gathered in Tampa for the event.

Video posted by the City of Tampa on Saturday shows the pirate ship Jose Gasparilla firing off cannons and docking in Tampa to start the event.

The ship was named after pirate Jose Gaspar “who terrorized the coastal waters of West Florida during the late 18th and early 19th centuries,” the city’s website explained. Credit: City of Tampa via Storyful
