A car park will remain closed as works to replace a dangerous footbridge in Warwickshire are about to start. The old footbridge from the Radford Road to Newbold Comyn had to be closed in August last year on safety grounds.

In March of this year, the bridge in Leamington Spa was removed and now Warwick District Council has revealed that preparation work is under way ahead of a new pedestrian and cycle bridge being put into place. Acknowledging how long the project has taken, the council said it has had to look at the timing of the works due to the restrictions in place to protect fish during the breeding season.

Councillor Will Roberts, cabinet member for neighbourhood services, said: "It’s been a long wait, but I am delighted to say that we are now making good progress and are on track to open an improved bridge with a three-metre walkway which is suitable for both cyclists and walkers later this year.”

The council has added that the Radford Road car park will remain closed while the works to prepare for and then install the new bridge are in progress. It has urged pedestrians to continue to use the alternative entrances to Newbold Comyn from the Willes Road or Newbold Terrace East.
