Caravan Cabriolet! Driver Converts Mobile Home Into A Makeshift Trailer

THEY are meant to provide a roof over your head on your travels.

But not this caravan – which appears to have undergone some rather dramatic modifications.

For rather than using it as a mobile home, one man decided to cut it in two and use it as a makeshift trailer.

Police discovered the modified caravan attached to a broken-down car in a layby.

The driver had bought the clapped-out caravan for just £25 and had planned to fill it with glass for a conservatory and drive on the motorway.

Officers who made the shocking discovery on the A38 near Plymouth, Devon, said the owner was also driving without insurance and had attempted to write the number plate on with a pen – but had missed off a digit.

PC Pablo Beckhurst said: ‘The driver had borrowed a friend’s vehicle to drive on trade insurance, but the policy was not valid.

'He had bought a caravan for £25, cut the roof off it and had every intention of driving it all the way to the M5 at Exeter, one of the busiest roads down here.

'He had written the number plate on with a pen, but missed a digit off by accident.

'There was one piece of rope holding the sides from falling out on to the road, the lights were not working, the tyres had cracked and were not roadworthy.

'What he was planning was even more worrying - he was planning to use it as a trailer for a conservatory, so he would have filled it with glass and driven it back.’

PC Beckhurst says he has dealt with many incidents involving caravans on the road, but nothing like this.

He said: 'We called for a specialist traffic unit, and even he was shocked.

'This really was a case of someone just not thinking things through at all, endangering other road users through his decisions.’

The caravan was impounded and the driver faces six penalty points on his licence for driving without insurance.
