Card Readings Turn Monstrous for Avantika and Jacob Batalon in Chilling Trailer for “Tarot” Horror Movie

'Tarot' scares its way into movie theaters May 10

Tarot cards are getting the horror movie treatment.

On Tuesday, Sony Pictures Entertainment released the trailer for its new horror movie Tarot, in which a group of teenagers inadvertently release horrifying evil spirits when they find a deck of tarot cards and decide to take part in a share of readings.

"When a group of friends recklessly violates the sacred rule of Tarot readings – never use someone else’s deck – they unknowingly unleash an unspeakable evil trapped within the cursed cards," reads an official synopsis for the movie. "One by one, they come face to face with fate and end up in a race against death to escape the future foretold in their readings."

Tarot is cowritten and codirected by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, who both make their feature directorial debuts after writing and production jobs on movies like 2022's Moonfall and last year's Expend4bles.

The film stars Mean Girls' Avantika and Spider-Man series actor Jacob Batalon, as well as Harriet Slater (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) and Adain Bradley (The Bold and the Beautiful).

The movie comes after A24 scored one of 2023's horror hits with Talk to Me, which followed a group of teens who discover they can talk to spirits with the use of an embalmed hand they discover at a party. Similarly to Tarot, the teens accidentally summon evil spirits while playing a game with the hand and must confront the monsters in the real world.
