Cardiff pub to be demolished and replaced by housing
A disused pub in Cardiff is set to be demolished and replaced with social housing. The site comprises the disused New Penn (Pennsylvania) pub, at 204A Brynfedw in Llanedeyrn, which closed in 2020.
The building is described by planning documents as a "sprawling complex" of single and two-storey buildings, with a car park. Cardiff Council entered a planning application on Monday, October 23, 2023 to demolish the pub and build 11 affordable dwellings on the site - all between two and two-and-a-half storeys in height. Of these, seven would be two-bedroom and four would be three-bedroom homes. For the latest Cardiff news, sign up to our newsletter here

The plans include car access and parking for residents, and say the majority of existing trees on site will be retained with another 10 planted within the courtyard and adjacent to Brynfedw Road.
The application went before the planning committee and was granted permission on Monday, April 15, 2024. The committee report said the plans would "make an important contribution to the overall affordable housing supply within Llanedeyrn" and redevelop a brownfield site currently "unused and in a visually poor state".
As part of the plans, the council unilaterally entered a Section 106 agreement confirming 100% of the dwellings would be social rented, and pledging to contribute £23,449 towards public open space as the project itself provides none.
