Stephen Doughty has held the seat of Cardiff South & Penarth with 17,428 votes, a majority of 11,767. “It’s a real honour to be elected to the new constituency of Cardiff South & Penarth,” he said.

Doughty spoke of spending 12 years as an MP in opposition and said it had been frustrating. “You aren’t able to change the fundamentals. To have a chance to change that and put the country back on a path of hope is one that fills me with a lot of excitement,” he said.

On Labour being in power both in Cardiff Bay and Westminster Doughty said: “I’m really hopeful for an optimistic partnership going forward, one that’s going to be constructive, pragmatic and one that’s going to be built on a team approach.”

“We’ve seen some difficult times in recent years between the two governments and I think now we are going to see a new chapter to that page,” he said.

The Green Party came second with 5,661 votes, Conservatives third with 5,459. The turnout in the Cardiff South & Penarth constituency was 53.93%, lower than the 64.2% turnout seen in the 2019 general election, but it’s important to note that the constituency changed following the 2023 Boundary Review.

As part of the redesign of Welsh constituencies, around a third of the existing Cardiff South and Penarth constituency, a safe Labour seat, is changing this election. As well as 67.5% of the former constituency, 21.8% of Cardiff Central and 8.3% of the Vale of Glamorgan have been added.
