Carol Burnett’s Favorite Cocktail Is as Timeless as She Is
Raise a glass to the actor’s comeback in Palm Royale with this easy classic cocktail.
After Lucille Ball, the unofficial reigning redhead “queen of comedy” for decades has been the one, the only Carol Burnett.
The comedian, actor, and singer rose to fame during “The Garry Moore Show” in the late 1950s and 1960s, and cemented her place as a Hollywood star throughout the impressive 11-year run of “The Carol Burnett Show” in the ‘60s and ‘70s. These days, Burnett’s popularity is no longer just a laughing matter.
The 91-year-old is a scene-stealer in the new Apple TV+ series “Palm Royale.” In the series, Burnett plays Norma Dellacorte, who is known as a royal figure of another kind: the grand dame of Palm Beach, due to her influence, wealth, and her signature Beach Ball party.
Although we meet Norma at the start of a drama series in a coma due to a tragic embolism, the show includes flashbacks to Norma’s most jewel-studded days, circa 1949. In one scene, Norma is shown rocking a chic light blue jacket and head wrap while holding a martini glass. So it stands to reason that when the team at “Extra” caught up with Burnett recently, they asked about her go-to beverage.
Carol Burnett's Favorite Cocktail
“Sex and the City's” Carrie Bradshaw would certainly approve of Burnett’s signature drink: “I like a cosmopolitan,” she revealed to “Extra.”
In case you could use a quick refresher, besides being a Bradshaw (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) favorite on the ‘90s HBO series, a Cosmopolitan is one of the top 50 cocktails many mixologists master before tending bar. And since it asks for just 4 simple ingredients, a Cosmo also earned a spot in our round-up of 25 popular cocktail recipes you should know if you love making drinks at home.
You need not be a professional mixologist to ace it. Our popular Cosmopolitan Cocktail recipe will coach you through it. To make one just fill a cocktail shaker with ice, then add vodka, cranberry juice, orange-flavored liqueur (such as Cointreau), and fresh lime juice. Cover and shake until the outside of the cup is frosty, then strain into a chilled glass. Garnish with a lime twist or wedge, if desired.
“And Just Like That…” you’ve made a Cosmopolitan worthy of serving to Burnett!
The result is a “fabulous drink” that’s “very, very yummy” and “always gets rave reviews,” according to Allrecipes fans.
Just like Burnett does from viewers and co-stars. Kristen Wiig, who plays Maxine in “Palm Royale,” told our pals at PEOPLE that whether she’s sharing happy hour or just a simple text conversation with Burnett, it’s a blessing.
“We have dinner and talk and text and she's so funny…I did press with her yesterday and she was cracking everybody up. And I am a better person from knowing her. I just love her,” Wiig said.
