Cary Joji Fukunaga has been revealed as the director of the latest James Bond film.

Producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson made the announcement via Twitter on Thursday.

“We are delighted to be working with Cary,” they said. “His versatility and innovation make him an excellent choice for our next James Bond adventure.”

For some, Fukunaga may seem like an unlikely choice to replace Danny Boyle. Up until now, the hot favourites to take on Bond were Bart Layton, director of American Animals, S.J. Clarkson, director of the next instalment of Star Trek, and Yann Demange, director of the upcoming flick White Boy Rick.

But with a host of critically acclaimed films under his belt, such as Beast of No Nation and Jane Eyre, the latest instalment of the 007 classic is set to be an exciting one.

Here's everything you need to know about director Cary Joju Fukunaga and the new James Bond film:

When will the New James Bond film be released?

The new film will be released worldwide on Feburary 14, 2020 with filming beginning on March 4, 2019.

The release date is a few months behind its original date of November 8 2019, thanks to Boyle's departure over apparent disputes with producers.

Fukunaga was described as a "rising talent" when he debuted his film Sin Nombre, winning him the directing award at Sundance in 2009.

Already gaining critical acclaim, he went on to direct Jane Eyre starring Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska, which was nominated for a BAFTA and an Academy Award.

He was also behind the screenplay for the adaption of Stephen King's horror It, starring Bill Skarsgård.

In his TV work, he directed the first season of True Detective, a project which earned him an Emmy award in 2014.

Most recently, he directed Maniac, a dark comedy for Netflix starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill.

He also directed the 2015 graphic war film Beasts of No Nation starring Idris Elba.

Speaking about filming the violent scenes in the film, Fukunaga told TIME magazine: "I know inevitably there will be people who can't make it through the film. But I also couldn't diminish it so much that it didn't feel authentic."

Back when the James Bond gig was just a glint in Fukunaga's eye, he also said that Elba would make a great Bond - rejecting the author Anthony Horowitz's suggestion that the actor was "too street" for the role.

"If they wanted him to play Bond, he could do it," Fukunaga told The Telegraph. "He's suave, debonair, he can drive cars really well, he's a gear-head, and he can do the action."

Elba finally shut down claims that he was lined up to be the next Bond after teasing fans that he had accepted the 007 role.
