Casualty Star Has Ear Bitten Off In Attack

An actor who appeared in long-running BBC medical drama Casualty has had part of his ear bitten off during an attack.

Clive Mantle, 55, who also featured in hit TV series Game Of Thrones , underwent surgery to save his ear after the early-morning attack on Sunday.

He had been staying at a Travelodge in Forster Street on Newcastle's Quayside after appearing in a touring production of The Ladykillers at the city's Theatre Royal.

A 32-year-old man from Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, has been charged with wounding with intent. He will appear before Newcastle magistrates next month.

It was believed Mantle was attacked at 4.30am after he asked other guests to keep the noise down.

A spokesman for the actor's agent, London-based Saraband Associates, said the police and ambulance crews were called after the attack and the part of his ear which was severed was reattached.

Mantle - who played surgeon Mike Barret in Casualty - will see a specialist in Oxford on Tuesday to see if that has been a success.

He will not be available to appear in The Ladykillers run in Manchester as he has been told he should not get make-up near his wound.

The spokesman added: "He is very badly shaken up. He sounds very wobbly today."

Mantle, who is over 6ft 5ins tall, played Greatjon Umber in the first series of Game Of Thrones.
