2024 has seen the tragic deaths of a number of celebrities. This year we’ve said goodbye to the actor Chance Perdomo, psychotherapist Derek Draper, and dancer Robin Windsor to name but a few of the stars we’ll dearly miss. We have also paid tribute to presenter Jonnie Irwin and TV star George Gilbey, who both passed away this year.

Of course, every loss - at every age - is tragic, and all of these figures, who have delighted, shocked, and entertained us throughout the years will be sorely missed by their family, friends and fans. Their absence will be keenly felt, but so too will the memories they’ve given us, which we’ll be sure to cherish.

We hope their loved ones can take some comfort in celebrating their achievements and the legacy they leave behind. In homage, we reflect on the lives of the celebrities who passed away in 2024, along with their special contributions to the projects that brought them into our lives. We will also consider how the people closest to the stars paid touching tributes - and how we believe their loved ones would want us to remember them.

In many cases, like that of Derek Draper, who battled with Covid-19 complications for years, and raised awareness along with his wife presenter Kate Garraway, their families continue to uphold the values they stood for, continuing their work as change-makers determined to make our world better than they found out.

Additionally, our tribute to the celebrities we lost in 2023, including greats like Tina Turner, Matthew Perry, Sinéad O'Connor, Paul O’Grady, Sir Michael Gambon, Angus Cloud, and more stars can be read here.

Chance Perdomo

American-British actor Chance Perdomo tragically died aged 27 following a motorcycle accident in March.

Perdomo starred in numerous film and television series, including Netflix’s reboot of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. His other roles included Landon Gibson in the After film franchise and Andre Anderson in Gen V, a spinoff to superhero series The Boys.

Perdomo, who completed a Law degree before training at the world-renowned Identity School of Acting, was awarded a BAFTA Breakthrough Brit Award and a Screen International Star of Tomorrow title.

His publicist confirmed his death, releasing a touching statement on behalf of Perdomo’s family and representatives.

George Gilbey

In March we said goodbye to George Gilbey, who famously appeared on Gogglebox before he appeared on Celebrity Big Brother. Gilbey starred on Gogglebox for eight series, appearing on the Channel 4 show alongside his mum Linda and stepdad Pete.

Tragically, he reportedly fell from a height while at work. The official X account (formerly known as Twitter) for Gogglebox shared a tribute to Gilbey. “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Linda, and George’s family and friends at this very sad time,” it said.

Robin Windsor

Dancer Robin Windsor tragically died in February aged 44. Best known for his 2010-2013 stint on Strictly Come Dancing as a professional dancer, he delighted audiences with his performances while partnered with stars including Deborah Meaden, Lisa Riley, Anita Dobson and Patsy Kensit.

The sad news was confirmed by production company Sisco Entertainment, who he had been working with prior to his death. “Beyond his impeccable dancing, Robin’s vibrant spirit lit up the room, infusing rehearsals and performances with infectious energy and warmth. His laughter was contagious, his kindness boundless. His friendship was a gift cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him,” the touching tribute read.

Strictly stars also shared their condolences, with judge Craig Revel Horwood describing Windsor as “one of the kindest, gentle, honest, funny and caring people,” he’s ever worked with.

Jonnie Irwin

TV presenter Jonnie Irwin died in February, as his wife confirmed in a moving statement. Best known for A Place in the Sun, the presenter, 50, had been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 2020.

He chose to keep his diagnosis private until 2022, at which point he went public in the hope of inspiring others. “It’s got to the point now where it feels like I’m carrying a dirty secret, it’s become a monkey on my back.

“I hope that by shaking that monkey off I might inspire people who are living with life-limiting prospects to make the most of every day, to help them see that you can live a positive life, even though you are dying.

“One day, this is going to catch up with me, but I’m doing everything I can to hold that day off for as long as possible,” said Irwin in a statement at the time.

Following his death, his wife Jessica Holmes paid an emotional tribute to the father of three. “As we remember the beautiful moments shared with Jonnie, let us celebrate a life well-lived and a legacy that will forever be etched in our hearts. Jonnie may be gone from our sight, but his love, laughter, and memories will live on,” she said.

Derek Draper

After a years-long and much-documented battle with Covid-19 complications, Derek Draper passed away early January. The news was confirmed in a moving tribute from his wife Kate Garraway, who has been vocal about the need for greater support for carers.

In the statement, which was shared by Garraway’s Good Morning Britain co-host, Susanna Reid, she said: "I am certain that it is the support that you have given me and sent to Derek that has sustained us through these tough nearly four years, motivating us to fight on for each other and for those who can't fight for themselves. It will sustain us to continue that fight in the weeks, months and years to come.”

Draper, a former political advisor and psychotherapist, spent over 214 days in treatment on a ventilator after he contracted Covid-19 in 2020. Tragically, the virus caused brain inflammation and kidney failure among other complications.
