Celtic have been told to snap up Scott McKenna this summer by the defender's pal Stephen O'Donnell after he was released by Nottingham Forest.

The centre-back is currently in Germany with the Scotland squad as they gear up for Euro 2024 - but is on the look-out for a new club after his contract with the English Premier League side came to an end. The 27-year-old struggled to hold down a regular first-team spot following the arrival of Nuno as boss and was shipped out to FC Copenhagen on loan - where he gained Champions League experience facing off against Manchester City in the last 16.

The Scottish Premiership champions are likely to be in the market for a centre-back in this window after Gustaf Lagerbielke and Maik Nawrocki failed to make a significant last season following their summer arrival - with Cameron Carter-Vickers and Liam Scales acting as the undisputed first-choice pairing at the back. Stephen Welsh offered back up to the duo during an injury-hampered campaign.

And asked about McKenna's future and if he saw him at Celtic, Motherwell captain O'Donnell responded on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard: "He is a player I know really well. I am friends with him.

"He is out of contract and any international who is out of contract who has played in the Premier League 50 times there has got to be interest from both sides of the Old Firm. There will be lots of interest from other clubs in other countries but if they (Celtic) wanted him they would try and get him. Would I sign him for Celtic? Yeah, probably but I don’t know what the manager is looking for.
