New Channel Allows Large Ships to Leave Area Near Collapsed Baltimore Bridge

Four of 11 large commercial vessels passed through a newly opened deep-water channel in Baltimore, Maryland, on April 25, weeks after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed, the Baltimore Sun reported.

The first of these was the Balsa 94, a bulk carrier sailing under a Panama flag and headed for St John’s, Canada.

The ship was one of 11 stuck in the harbor after bridge collapsed on March 26. Three further vessels later made their way through the channel on Thursday, according to the Baltimore Sun.

The US Army Corps of Engineers said debris and wreckage removal was “on-going in support of a top priority to safely and efficiently open the Fort McHenry Channel.” Credit: DVIDS via Storyful
