Charity Lawson Prioritizes 'Date Night at Least Once a Week' with Fiancé Dotun Olubeko amid “DWTS” (Exclusive)
Former Bachelorette Charity Lawson tells PEOPLE she knew it "was not going to be easy" balancing her relationship and the demands of 'DWTS' but "that just meant I had to do more to make it work"
Charity Lawson is putting in the effort on and off the dance floor.
Following Tuesday night’s episode of Dancing with the Stars, the Bachelorette star, 27, opened up to PEOPLE about balancing the demands of the ABC dance competition show and her relationship with fiancé Dotun Olubeko.
“You have your priorities and you choose to prioritize the things that you care about, and so for me, I knew coming into Dancing With the Stars, it was not going to be easy, but that just meant I had to do more to make it work,” she explained.
“I'm very intentional with no matter how much time we get, I'm spending quality time with him, trying to make a date night at least once a week, little things here and there,” she added. “So he's really just a good supporter too. He understands it, so him just taking the backseat is also super helpful.”
The reality star also shared how her relationship with Olubeko inspired her Viennese Waltz to Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” on Tuesday night.
“I feel like when we listen to or when we hear Whitney's iconic song, ‘I Will Always Love You’, there can be two associations with it. Obviously, the very loving, but also from The Bodyguard, the movie, that song and when it's played, it kind of has a little bit of a tragic feeling to it.”
“So I wanted to put a little bit of a spin on it and reflect on happy things that brought me joy and things that made me reflect on love,” she added. “So obviously, it was easiest for me to bask in me and Dotun's relationship and our engagement.”
She shared that she “channeled that energy of just thinking of him when I danced this dance and dedicated this one for him.”
Lawson previously told PEOPLE that Olubeko has been her greatest supporter during her time on the ABC dance competition show.
“He is truly my number one fan,” she shared. “He's been helping me with my diet, my wellness, all those things. Also, the mental and emotional too. He's always checking in, so I'm super grateful for him.”
Bachelor Nation fans saw Lawson and Olubeko get engaged in the season 20 finale of The Bachelorette. Right after she said “yes” to his proposal, Olubeko was the one to reveal that Lawson would be given a spot to compete on the competitive dance reality show.
"So I know you like to cut up, you like to dance and you like to get down," he teased Lawson. "And you know that we've talked about this, about how amazing this opportunity would be, and I am so happy to be the one to tell you that you’re going to be on Dancing with the Stars."
