Producers on the new project include Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of DNA, along with Peter Rice. A24 is handling the film’s global release.

Melton, who is known for his role on The CW’s Riverdale, received widespread acclaim for his performance in Todd Haynes’ 2023 film May December. Melton notched recent supporting actor wins with the New York Film Critics Circle Awards and Gotham Awards for the feature in which he stars opposite Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman.

The actor’s other credits include the films The Sun Is Also a Star, Bad Boys for Life and Secret Headquarters, in addition to appearing in the television series Poker Face and History of the World, Part II.

Garland’s Civil War, which tells the story of a second civil war dividing the nation, stars Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny, Jesse Plemons and Nick Offerman. The filmmaker previously directed the titles Men, Annihilation and Ex Machina.

THR broke the news last month that Garland is writing the 28 Days Later sequel entitled 28 Years Later that Danny Boyle will direct. Garland wrote the screenplay for the original zombie flick that Fox Searchlight released in 2003.
