Charli XCX has issued a stern warning to her fans following an incident at a recent show in Brazil where attendees chanted “Taylor Swift is dead.”

Footage from her Partygirl DJ set at a São Paulo nightclub showed a portion of the crowd shouting the offensive phrase in Portuguese.

In response to the incident, the 31-year-old took to social media to express her disapproval, sharing a message over a screenshot of the video that brought the chant to her attention.

She wrote on her Instagram Story on Sunday: “Can the people who do this please stop.

“Online or at my shows. It is the opposite of what I want and it disturbs me that anyone would think there is room for this in this community. I will not tolerate it.”

Earlier this month, Charli XCX's fans criticised Swift for releasing a UK exclusive digital version of her album, The Tortured Poets Department, the same week as the Von dutch singer’s latest album, Brat.

Many speculated that Swift’s move hindered the chances of Brat claiming the top spot on the UK's Official Charts.

Since releasing her critically-acclaimed sixth album, fans have speculated that her track, Sympathy is a Knife, contains veiled references to Swift.

The British singer had previously hinted that the song was inspired by an unnamed girl who "taps my insecurities."

Lyrics from the song read, “Don’t know if it’s real or if I’m spiraling…One voice tells me that they laugh. George says I’m just paranoid…Don’t wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend’s show. Fingers crossed behind my back. I hope they break up quick.”

Charli is engaged to George Daniel, the drummer of the indie-pop band The 1975, whose frontman Matty Healy had a brief relationship with Swift in 2023.

Back in 2018, she was one of the support acts for Swift’s Reputation Tour, along with Camila Cabello.

Although opening for Swift gave her exposure to a larger audience, the Boys hitmaker later said that the experience made her realise she no longer wanted to be an opening act for other artists.

She told Pitchfork in 2019: “I’m really grateful that [Taylor] asked me on that tour. But as an artist, it kind of felt like I was getting up on stage and waving to five-year-olds.

“I need to just own my own f***ing s*** finally.”
