ChatGPT down: OpenAI working to fix major global outage after spike in reported problems
Millions of users of OpenAI's popular chatbot ChatGPT are facing major disruptions in accessing the generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) service on Thursday.
OpenAI has acknowledged a major outage and that it is experiencing "increased error rates" for ChatGPT.
"This issue has now been resolved. Between 3.33 am and 4.23 am PST [12.33 pm and 1.23 pm CET], customers experienced elevated error rates on ChatGPT and the API," the company initially said in a message at 1.43 pm CET, indicating that a fix had been implemented and the situation was being monitored.

However, users are still reporting outages and the company has since updated its website with a message at 2.43 pm CET saying the ongoing issue has been investigated and the cause found.
Users from around the world have been reporting various issues with accessing the chatbot for the last two days with a large spike in reports around 12.30pm CET on Thursday, according to outage tracking site Downdetector.com
In the UK, a peak of over 5,100 reports had been made at the time of publication. In the United States, that number stood at over 4,300.
Users reported getting a "Bad gateway" error message when trying to access the site as well as the app.
Reports on Downdetector.com show users were also having issues with either upload speeds or accessing ChatGPT on Wednesday.
@BeneddraNaim posted on social media platform X: "Hi @OpenAI, it seems there’s a general issue with photo uploads in your platform. Many users (including myself) have noticed that the feature isn’t working properly. Could you confirm if this is being looked into? Thanks for your help!"
Other users recorded having similar issues but it was limited to a peak of only 296 reports in the US on the outage tracking site at around 5 pm CET.
OpenAI said it had resolved issues with logins and file uploads in an update message at 5.15 pm PT on Wednesday (2.15 am CET on Thursday).
OpenAI's last major reported outage was December 26 when ChatGPT was out of action for three hours, according to the company's status.openai.com website.
