Cheapest places for petrol and diesel in Merseyside this weekend

The cheapest place in Merseyside to fill up your car with petrol is at a Sainsbury's garage in Liverpool.

According to the latest data supplied by retailers, a driver in an average family car could save up to £4.40 by filling up at this forecourt, compared to the most expensive petrol station. The Sainsbury's garage at 112 East Prescot Road, Kensington is charging motorists 141.9p per litre, which means it would cost £78.05 to fill up an average 55 litre tank.

This is based on a feed of live petrol prices which was set up by the government's Competition and Markets Authority last September. A government body has issued an alert to all motorists concerning the price of fuel.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) released new data showing ‘concerning’ information about prices at the pumps across the country.

Dan Turnbull, Senior Director of Markets at the CMA, said: “Drivers are feeling the pinch as fuel prices have been edging up since January. We’re particularly concerned by high margins which indicate weakened competition and are not a good sign for drivers."

The average price for a litre of petrol across the Merseyside region this week is 146.2p.

The most expensive filling station in Merseyside is a Esso station at College Road, Sefton. The cost of standard petrol at this station is 149.9p, meaning it would cost a total of £82.45 to fill up an average family car at this forecourt.

For the owners of diesel cars, the cheapest place to fill up is the Sainsbury's garage at Liverpool. The cost of a litre of standard diesel at this forecourt was 150.9p, according to prices supplied by retailers.

Diesel car drivers in Merseyside are paying 2.3p less than the national average. The cheapest place to buy petrol in the country is at a Esso garage in North Yorkshire where a litre of standard petrol is 133.9p.

The most expensive petrol station in the country is a Shell garage in Elmbridge where motorists are charged 182.9p a litre.
