Thomas Tuchel has identified Matthijs de Ligt as a possible transfer target as Chelsea step up plans to rebuild their defence.

Sources in Italy claim Chelsea have made an approach for the Dutch centre-back but could face competition from Manchester City.

Chelsea are plotting a defensive rebuild this summer after losing Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen on free transfers to Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Jules Kounde remains their primary target but Barcelona are also interested in the Sevilla centre-back.

Chelsea have also been monitoring Lens wing-back Jonathan Clauss amid uncertainty over the future of Cesar Azpilicueta, who is wanted by Barcelona.

De Ligt has suggested he is unhappy with level of ambition being shown by Juventus and talks over a new contract have stalled, fuelling suggestions he could be sold.

The 22-year-old has a £107.4million release clause. Chelsea will not be prepared to splash out that much on him but Juventus could consider offers around £85m.

New Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is plotting a summer spending spree to ensure the Blues are in a position to challenge Manchester City and Liverpool next season.

Chelsea have identified Raheem Sterling as one of their top targets. They also have interest in Ousmane Dembele and Richarlison.
