Cheltenham Festival 2024 LIVE! Gold Cup results, updates and winners as Galopin Des Champs goes back-to-back

Cheltenham Festival 2024 LIVE!

Galopin Des Champs gave Willie Mullins back-to-back victories in the Gold Cup with a dominant run. It has already been a historic Festival for Mullins, who earlier this week secured a remarkable 100th win at the Festival, and has capped another special week in style. His eight-year-old stayer is just the ninth dual-winner of the 100-year-old race and only the second of the modern era after Al Boum Photo - another Mullins horse - in 2019 and 2020. Galopin Des Champs stormed away from Gerri Colombe up the hill.

It was Mullins’ third win of the day, and his 102nd in the Festival, after a perfect start to Friday at Cheltenham Festival. The Irish trainer now has nine winners this week, after Majborough took the Triumph Hurdle and Absurde then won a County Handicap Hurdle.

The Albert Bartlett was a thrilling race, as Harry Redknapp’s The Jukebox Man was pipped on the line by Stellar Story. Later today, The Hunters’ Chase Mares’ Chase and the Martin Pipe finale wrap up the biggest week in horse racing. Follow all the drama, results and latest tips from the 2024 Cheltenham Festival LIVE below!

Tip - Waterford Whisperers

Waterford Whisperers has come back stronger after seven months off and was well suited to an increase in distance when he won at Fairyhouse on December 2 last year.

He improved further with a runners-up spot on a Handicap hurdle at Leopardstown later that month and showed he's capable of more.

This outstanding mare came second to El Fabiolo at Leopardstown last month but was six lengths ahead of Tuesday's Champion Chase winner Captain Guinness.

She will be carrying more weight than the rest of the field but this Grade 2 race should be no issue and her quality should bring her through to win.

This horse is making his fifth appearance in this event - he won in 2022 and was runner-up in two.

He still retains most of his ability and was only beaten by a head at Naas on February 10 by On The Line, who has had three wins on the bounce.

Three-peat?

15:51 , Alex Young

It's some atmosphere at the winners' enclosure as Galopin Des Champs and Paul Townend enter. Incredible.

Speaking to ITV Sport, Willie Mullins has not ruled out going for the Gold Cup three-peat next year with Galopin Des Champs.

Jockey Paul Townend on his FOURTH Gold Cup

15:46 , Alex Young

"Unbelievable. We had to go through his reserves.

"I rode him completely different to last year and he was so brave for me. I was afraid we didn't have enough but it's the Gold Cup so we had to go for it.

"What makes him a champion? His heart probably. We had to go through reserves which only special horses have."

Special horse!

Fastorslow, having unseated J J Slevin, was really the biggest threat to Galopin Des Champs.

In a class of his own.

Tip - Galopin Des Champs

It would have been the perfect ending to the Cinderella story of Hewick to come through for Shark Hanlon at the Gold Cup, but yesterday he decided the going was too soft for his nine-year-old gelding.

Hot favourite Galopin des Champs has suffered a couple of defeats at Punchestown but beat Fastorslow by 4 1/2 lengths in the Irish Gold Cup, it's hard to see any outcome other than another Gold Cup win for the Willie Mullins horse.

Tip - Readin Tommy Wrong

Yet another phenomenal horse from Willie Mullins' yard. Back to back wins this season, the last victory was in the Grade 1 Lawlor's race at Naas and he benefited enormously from the step up to 2m4f. Came from last to first that day.

He makes the odd mistake with the hurdles but that will improve with experience

Michael O'Leary has been speaking ahead of this race, asked about the chances of his horse King of Kingsfield.

Fair to say he’s not hugely optimistic - says the ground has probably gone and yesterday’s rain ended their chances.

We shall see.

14.10: BetMGM County Handicap Hurdle

14:01 , Matt Verri

Tip - So Scottish E/W

This seven-year-old gelding was fourth last time out in a valuable handicap at Leopardstown and in his penultimate start was going well here before falling four out.

Many will think this horse's best days are behind him and his 2022 season was strong with three consecutive wins. He remains well weighted for today's race and, with bookmakers offering between five and seven places, offers value.

Latest odds: Plenty with chances

Tip - Highwind E/W

Made a mistake four out in last run out at Leopardstown, which put this four-year-old gelding out of contention, but even with a lack of fluency at Punchestown on January 15 he still managed to win because Highwind is a real fighter.

Good value going into this race and with bookies offering four places, it's well worth an E/W punt.

Blackmore hopeful of big Gold Cup run

12:47 , Matt Verri

Not much love from punters for Jungle Boogie in the Gold Cup, but you can never write off that Rachael Blackmore - Henry de Bromhead partnership.

“He showed a great attitude last time at Tramore on New Year's Day in the Savills Chase over two miles and seven furlongs, he rallied well after he was headed by Classic Getaway to get back up and win by a length,” Blackmore told Betfair as she discussed Jungle Boogie’s chances.

“He is 10-years-old now, but he is very lightly raced, he has raced just five times under all codes.

“He has been in good form at home, the soft ground will suit him and I hope that he can run a big race.”

Just over an hour until we get up and running on the final day of the Festival.

Mullins on Gold Cup chances

11:56 , Matt Verri

Willie Mullins has been discussing his runners in the Gold Cup.

Galopin Des Champs the defending champion and favourite - Mullins is in confident mood.

“He comes here in good order and has had a great season so far,” the trainer told Sporting Life.

“Everything has gone well with him over at Cheltenham this week and it’s just a case of keeping our fingers crossed that everything goes right on the day.”

On Monkfish’s chances, Mullins added: “The ground has come around his way as well and I’m very happy to let him take his chance.

“If he can return to anything like his novice form over fences it should put him into the frame.”

It’s currently dry at the course, but there has been plenty of rain over the last 24 hours.

No surprise that it’s heavy going on the hurdle course.

Prestbury Cup update

11:27 , Matt Verri

It has been a better couple of days for Great Britain in the Prestbury Cup.

Ireland won six of the seven races on Tuesday, but their lead has been cut since then... 12-8 heading into the final day.

Not a particularly brave prediction to suggest they will still come out on top after today!

Eventful day at the Festival!

11:13 , Matt Verri

Miss yesterday’s action at Cheltenham?

You’re in luck. Plenty of time to catch up on all the best bits, as Harry Redknapp and Sir Alex Ferguson stole the show.

Nicholls: Bravemansgame in top order

10:58 , Matt Verri

Can Bravemansgame spoil the Galopin Des Champs party in today’s big race?

It’s a big ask for the horse that came second 12 months ago, but trainer Paul Nicholls is in bullish mood.

“He is back for another crack at the Gold Cup after chasing home Galopin des Champs a year ago which was a brilliant effort,” Nicholls told Betfair.

“I expect him to be in the shake up again and drying ground would help. Good to soft would be perfect for him.

“I don't think we had Bravemansgame at his best in the first part of the season when his programme didn't work out as I'd have liked.

“But he has turned a corner since then, I've freshened him up and we have him right where he wants to be now. He worked great at Kempton recently and returns to Cheltenham in top order.”

Paul O’Briens tip: Galopin Des Champs

It would have been the perfect ending to the Cinderella story of Hewick to come through for Shark Hanlon at the Gold Cup, but yesterday he decided the going was too soft for his nine-year-old gelding.

Hot favourite Galopin Des Champs has suffered a couple of defeats at Punchestown but beat Fastorslow by 4 1/2 lengths in the Irish Gold Cup.

Football dominance on Day 3

It was a day to remember for Sir Alex Ferguson and Harry Redknapp.

Monmiral and Protektorat won in quick succession yesterday, giving Ferguson a sensational double at Prestbury Park.

"I've waited 20 years and now had two winners in 40 minutes," said Ferguson.

And Redknapp was also in the Winners’ Enclosure.

Shakem Up'Arry, owned by the former Tottenham boss, took the TrustATrader Plate Handicap Chase, as Redknapp enjoyed his first Festivall winner.

Painful week for Henderson

09:51 , Matt Verri

Nicky Henderson has had a nightmare few days.

Having been forced to pull out Constitution Hill before the Festival, the trainer has withdrawn a number of his horses throughout the week, due to the problems evidently affecting the yard.

Shishkin will not run in the Gold Cup, while Sir Gino misses out on the Triumph Hurdle.

Galopin Des Champs has arrived at Prestbury Park.

Al Boum Photo went back-to-back for Willie Mullins in 2019 and 2020 - can Galopin Des Champs do the same?

Galopin Des Champs can cement legacy

09:31 , Matt Verri

Willie Mullins has already reached a century of winners at the Cheltenham Festival. How dearly he would love to add the Gold Cup to his roll call in what is the event’s centenary year.

Galopin Des Champs, the superstar winner of last year’s edition, returns to Prestbury Park as a warm favourite to join an exclusive list of back-to-back Gold Cup winners, alongside such greats as Arkle, Golden Miller, Best Mate and L’Escargot.

If victory for Mullins’s runner 12 months ago was in part about redemption, coming a year after he had gone down at the last when set to run away with one of the meeting’s top novice chases, then round two would see a legend cemented.

Not only could the eight-year-old become just the ninth dual-winner of the 100-year-old race, but also do so off the back of a season bucking the frustrating modern fashion for a softly-softly approach to the Festival showpiece.

Gold Cup preview

08:36 , Matt Verri

Towards the end of a Cheltenham Festival that has been troubling on many levels, a Boodles Gold Cup (3.30) for the ages serves as some salvation.

The near-irrelevance of English trainers Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls has been shocking, with Ireland’s Willie Mullins hitting 100 Cheltenham winners on day two, and likely he can take the feature, too, with last year’s winner, Galopin Des Champs.

The only horse missing from an all-star cast is Shishkin, so sadly scratched due to the alarming Henderson form.

Galopin Des Champs could easily win again for all-conquering jockey Paul Townend, but preference here is for Gentlemansgame, with Darragh O’Keeffe in the saddle and trained by Mouse Morris.

Morris believes Gentlemansgame had as good a chance as anyone, bar Galopin Des Champs — and perhaps he is right.

He remains an exceptional target trainer, the stable is in form and he deliberately skipped Leopardstown with a view to the Gold Cup, even though the lightly-raced chaser has not run since overpowering Bravemansgame in the Charlie Hall in early November.

This is a truly exceptional renewal, with Monkfish coming back from the dead at Gowran and, given his profile, it is staggering — and a measure of the race — that he can be backed at 25s.
