Chicago Skyline Lights Up as Storms Hit Region

Severe thunderstorms in Chicago and surrounding areas saw the city’s skyline filled with lightning on February 27.

Footage and imagery captured by local photographer Craig Shimala shows numerous spectacular strikes.

His footage included the eye-catching sight of a lightning bolt striking the top of the former John Hancock Center, now known as 875 North Michigan Avenue.

Imagery from Shimala also features incredible stills of lightning strikes across the city skyline, as well as timelapse footage, additional videos as the storm passed, and Shimala himself setting up his camera to grab the perfect shots.

Local media reported that the storm arrived on “a day of temperatures so warm they nearly broke city weather records”. Earlier in the afternoon, temperatures reached 74 degrees at the city’s O’Hare International Airport. Credit: Craig Shimala via Storyful
