Chicago's Willis Tower Struck by Lightning During Severe Storms

A Chicago-based videographer captured the moment lightning struck Chicago’s Willis Tower on July 28 as the National Weather Service warned of severe storms bringing damaging wind, hail, torrential rain, and frequent lightning to the region.

The NWS later confirmed four tornadoes, ranging from EF-0 to EF-1, touched down in northeast Illinois.

Craig Shimala recorded this footage showing lightning striking Willis Tower, along with several other buildings. He told Storyful it was a “wild night of lightning.”

“Last night was a crazy Chicago storm chasers dream!” he wrote in a tweet. Credit: Craig Shimala via Storyful
