Chief of Police remembered in Greenup Co.

Apr. 10—GREENUP — Greenup County's commission adjourns every monthly fiscal court meeting in the memory of those who have passed on.

On Tuesday, they followed that up by lowering flags to half-staff to remember a former police chief in the county.

Jerry Matthew Cassidy served as Chief of Police in South Shore for 31 years and then worked 15 years as a deputy for the Greenup County Sheriff's Office. Cassidy, who had just retired in 2023, was 71 years old when he died on April 6.

Cassidy's funeral is today at 1 p.m. at Reed Funeral Home on Main Street.

"Jerry was without a doubt one of the most kind human beings you would ever meet," said Greenup County Judge-Executive Bobby Hall. "I've known him for 30 years and never heard a negative word come out of his mouth. He enjoyed helping people more than anybody I've ever met."

Greenup County Sheriff Matt Smith called Cassidy an "icon in South Shore, well, an icon anywhere he was."

"Jerry was an excellent person and he was a lifelong friend," Smith added. "He'd do anything for anybody. I can't say enough good things about Jerry. He will be missed amongst us all in the law enforcement community and in Greenup County. It saddens our hearts. We are all praying for his family."

Cassidy was just in the sheriff's office last week, Smith said. He had lost some weight due to sickness but he was still in good spirits, according to the sheriff.

"He was always in good spirits," Smith said. "Just a good-hearted guy."
