China’s fattest man, who used to weigh 35 stone (225kg) has successfully lost a third of his body weight - although it's taken him five years.

Liang Yong was last seen being transported on a steel-reinforced truck because he was too heavy to be carried in an ambulance.

But now, the proud 26-year-old is happy to share his new body, weighing in at a comparatively healthy 23 stone (146.4 kilos).

While Yong has a long way to go - he has concentrated his efforts on a long-term diet that will see his skin stretch back and reduce the likelihood of any adverse health effects commonly associated with crash diets.

He said: ‘It was not a record to be proud of when I was named the fattest man in China and was told it was officially registered at the Chinese record headquarters in 2007, but now I'm hoping to end up as the man who lost the most weight.'

He attributes his original weight problem to the fact that he was born heavy weighing in at 11lbs, and continued growing since then.

A local hospital agreed to treat him free of charge in order to monitor his progress medically and record data to help in treating other obese patients in a country.
