Chiwetel Ejiofor joins Charlize Theron in Netflix's The Old Guard

Chiwetel Ejiofor has joined Charlize Theron in Netflix's The Old Guard.

The female-fronted film, based on the comic book series of the same name, also stars Theron and If Beale Street Could Talk star Kiki Layne.

Written and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, it follows a group of immortal soldiers led by a woman called Andy (Charlize Theron), who come under threat once their immortality is unearthed by a mysterious new enemy.

Ejiofor joins the cast alongside Star Wars: The Last Jedi's Veronica Ngo and actor Harry Melling (via Variety).

Also involved in the project are Marwan Kenzari, Matthias Schoenaerts and Luca Marinelli.

The Old Guard started life as a graphic novel series, which was created by author Greg Rucka and illustrator Leandro Fernández.

In the graphic novel series, a group of mercenaries who do not die are startled when they find a new immortal woman soon after discovering their own immortality is at risk of exposure.

As well as The Old Guard, Oscar winner Ejiofor will soon be heard in the live action The Lion King remake as the voice behind the villainous Scar.

His other roles include 12 Years a Slave, Love Actually, Z for Zachariah and 2012.
