Chris Gauthier has died at the age of 48.

The English-born Canadian actor - who was best known for playing Smee in 'Once Upon a Time' - passed away on Friday (23.02.24) from an undisclosed short illness, his talent agency have confirmed.

TriStar Appearances/Event Horizon Talent told TVLine in a statement: “We can confirm that our dear friend and client, Chris Gauthier, passed away on Friday morning, February 23, at the age of 48.

"As a beloved Vancouver-based character actor, Chris shared his talents with so many of us both on television and in film. His loss is felt not just by his fans but by those of us who were lucky enough to know him more personally. On behalf of his family, we do ask for privacy during this time so that they are able to grieve properly."

His former co-star Colin O'Donoghue, who played Hook in 'Once Upon a Time' paid tribute to his friend and sent his condolences to Chris' wife Erin and their children.

He wrote on Instagram: Rest in Peace Chris! Heartbroken! My love and thoughts go out to Erin and the boys! You will be missed brother! You were the real captain!!(sic)"

And co-showrunner Adam Horowitz remembered the "kind, sweet and talented" actor.

He wrote on X: “So sad to hear of the passing of Chris Gauthier. Such a kind, sweet, and talented person. You will be missed.”

As well as his work on 'Once Upon a Time', Chris also enjoyed roles in 'Supernatural', 'Eureka', 'Harper's Island', 'Sanctuary', 'Smallville' and 'A Series of Unfortunate Events' on TV, while on the big screen, his film credits included 'Freddy vs. Jason', 'Agent Cody Banks' and '40 Days and 40 Nights'.
