Christian Bale’s kids are involved in choosing the roles their father takes

Christian Bale is a proud father of two children.

The Dark Knight star and his wife, Sibi Blažić, got married in 2000 and welcomed their daughter, Emmeline “Luka” Bale, five years later. Their son, Joseph Bale, followed in 2014.

In 2022, Christian shared that his kids do “not often” watch his films.

"They get to enjoy some of them,” he told PEOPLE. “They really encouraged me to go make [Thor: Love and Thunder]. They really wanted that, and I enjoyed that and I appreciate that they did ask me to go do that."

Christian added, "What I like thinking about is that I'm hoping in the years to come they will come to appreciate these films even if they don't right now."

The Oscar winner also gave his kids a sweet shout-out during his acceptance speech at the 2019 Golden Globes, even using their nicknames. "And thank you for our beautiful children, Banana and Burrito,” Christian said. “They've given me a love and a soul I never thought possible."

Emmeline “Luka” Bale, 19

Christian became a father in March 2005 with the birth of his daughter, Emmeline “Luka” Bale.

The doting dad vowed in an interview with British GQ seven years later that he would not miss his little girl “growing up for anything.” He added, “Not even for Batman. I'm certainly not going to be one of those fathers who picks up a photo of his daughter and has regrets about not being around."

Christian also called his daughter a “little rascal” during the interview, adding that the time he spent with her was “just incredible.”

Luka even visited the set of her father’s 2009 film Terminator Salvation. “She enjoys coming to visit the sets and she got to play around with the Terminator models and everything like that,” Christian said at the time, per the Daily Mail.

The actor also revealed that his daughter was “getting a good understanding of the fact” that he “plays dress-up for a living.” Christian explained, “She dresses up as Darth Vader, she dresses up as Yoda, you know, and I say, 'That's all I do, that's it — I do exactly the same as you do with your friends.' "

As she's grown up, Christian shared that his daughter loves to sing. He told PEOPLE that Luka especially loved Taylor Swift when she was little — to the point where he would get them stuck in his head on set. Years later, Luka couldn’t believe that her famous father got to sing with Swift in 2022’s Amsterdam.

“I went to my daughter and said, ‘You know who I sang with today? Taylor Swift.’ And she was like, ‘Wait, what? Why would you be doing that?’ ” Christian told The Hollywood Reporter.

While Luka appeared in her father’s 2022 Marvel film, Thor: Love and Thunder, she has since followed in her mother’s modeling footsteps. Christian’s firstborn modeled in Dolce & Gabbana’s 2021 Alta Moda show. The following year, Luka attended the fashion house’s Alta Moda presentation with her parents and younger brother.

“A big thank you @dolcegabbana for such a beautiful night,” Luka wrote on Instagram. “I am beyond grateful. :)”

Joseph Bale, 9

In 2014, Christian and Blažić welcomed their second child, Joseph Bale. The mom of two had debuted her baby bump on the red carpet at the Academy Awards a few months earlier.

Like his big sister, Joseph had a role in 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder — Christian’s kids played children of New Asgard. Joseph and other children in the Marvel film even helped design the monsters that Christian’s character, Gorr, summons.

“We actually know which monsters are my kids' monsters,” Christian told Marvel. “[Director Taika Waititi] had them draw a lot of sketches, and then the magic of the VFX guys, they created something monstrous out of that. And, and absolutely, those are identifiable, and that's very exciting to see.”

He added, “Taika was wonderful with that. He made a really family-friendly environment, and everyone was around about, and making friends, and playing soccer and whatnot, and hanging out.”

While there were some “potential scheduling conflicts,” Christian’s children told their dad to take the Marvel role.

“I said to my family, ‘I don't think it's going to work out,’ and they went, ‘No, you make it work out. You're doing this, Dad.’ ” The Dark Knight Rises star told Screen Rant. “They gave me my marching orders, and I dutifully obeyed.”
