It’s Christian Grey Week! All 3 ‘Fifty Shades’ Films Resurface on Netflix and iTunes

John Krasinski’s “IF” (Paramount) needs strong post-theatrical results to make it a success. Initial results from PVOD ($19.99 rental), which reached #1 right away at both iTunes and Fandango, suggest it is headed in the right direction.

In the short term, it might be able to sustain that pace; its main competition will be this week’s release of the underperforming “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” More critical is whether it can sustain multiple weeks at higher levels. With a $110 million before-marketing cost, $180 million in worldwide gross needs supplementing.

Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man” is sustaining its run. Netflix’s $20 million worldwide acquisition, after an above-average 10 days as #1 on its top 10 movie viewing chart, is still at #2. “Trigger Warning,” a far less-acclaimed Netflix original, is currently #1. The action/thriller title, which stars Jessica Alba and is the American debut for Indonesian director Mouly Surya, was filmed nearly three years ago.

The VOD charts otherwise reshuffled recent leaders. “Civil War” (A24) fell from first to #3 at Fandango, #6 at iTunes. “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” (Lionsgate), rental price reduced to $9.99, continues to have home appeal above its modest ($20 million) theatrical take, second at iTunes, #6 at Fandango. Sony reduced the rental for “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” to $5.99, elevating it to second at Fandango, third at iTunes.

Some opportunistic marketing by Universal led to all three films in the “Fifty Shades” franchise getting heavy viewing. “Fifty Shades of Grey,” currently #4 at Netflix, debuted at #1 last Wednesday. Two sequels, now renting for $3.99 (“Darker” and “Freed”) are on iTune’s top 10 (#5 and #8 respectively).

“Tell Them You Love Me” was a surprise #1 at Netflix during the week and briefly replaced “Hit Man” as top film The Kino Lorber-acquired documentary, which had a VOD release in February, centers on the relationship between a professor and a nonverbal man with cerebral palsy that led to criminal charges. It is currently #5.

Parallel to the huge response to Disney’s “Inside Out 2,” five of Netflix’s top 10 remain animated films. “Home” at #3 is currently the highest.
