The Circle viewers are ALREADY angry with one player

Brand new reality TV show The Circle entered our lives last night, and it's fair to say that viewers had mixed feelings about the format.

The entire premise of the show is based around social media and how it's infiltrated every aspect of our lives – so much so, that we can even create a whole different version of ourselves online.

During the very first episode, we were introduced to the new batch of contestants. Some of them have decided that honesty is the best policy, whilst others are using The Circle to create a fake profile in order to win likes.

One player in particular seems to have annoyed people already – Jennifer, 40, has decided to pose as a cancer doctor.

Explaining why she'd chosen that particular lie to tell, Jennifer explained: "Medicine is a profession that's respected and trusted. Cancer has touched almost everybody's lives, so that will resonate. My mum's been through breast cancer, so I know all the terminology. I just hope there's not a real doctor in there! It's a gamble that could backfire immediately."

Viewers at home are already unimpressed with her decision.

"I am all for ANY sort of reality tv but when you've got people pretending to be a CANCER doctor and completely lying about who they are to be popular I am 1,000% out. Stupid concept and potentially very very damaging," one Twitter user wrote.

It seems that Jennifer had pre-empted the upset, admitting that pretending to be a cancer doctor was a "disgraceful" and "repugnant" thing to do – if it was real life. But she intends to prove the point that the things we see online are often "fake".

"This is just a game, it's only pretend, so there's no need to get too offended," she said before entering the Channel 4 apartment. "It's not intended to cause harm. If it does upset anyone, then I'll apologise profusely and explain my reasons for doing it."

Some viewers aren't sold on the idea of 'Catfishing' in general.

Whilst others are intrigued to see how the show might play out...

We're already hooked.

The Circle continues tonight (September 19) at 10pm on Channel 4.
