City streets flooded as heavy rain batters Merseyside

Heavy rain caused flooding and disruption on several major roads this evening.

The Met Office extended its yellow weather warning earlier today as thunderstorms and heavy downpours were expected to batter Merseyside. The warning has been in place since 2pm and covers parts of south Liverpool, Wirral, Kirkby and West Lancashire.

Met Office experts warned there could be some flooding in these areas, with damage to buildings also possible from lightning strikes.

ECHO photographer Iain Watts captured severe flooding on Lower Breck Road in Anfield this evening. People in the area reported seeing "two to three feet" of floodwater there. Fortunately, the water appeared to be draining rapidly.

There was also flooding on Queens Drive and Muirhead Avenue. An ECHO reader told us emergency services were struggling to get through. She said: "Muirhead flooded, ambulance on blues struggled to get through." She also reported seeing a fire engine struggle through the floodwater on Queens Drive, "heading towards Tuebrook".

The Met Office said in a statement: "Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to break out this afternoon and move northwards, slowly dying out during the evening and first part of the night.

"There is the chance of some localised impacts from heavy rain, as well as damage from lightning strike. 10-20mm of rain is possible in an hour or so, with some places potentially seeing 30mm in a few hours."
