New classic car rules for drivers in England could start after July 4

New classic car rules in England could be introduced from July 4, after the government launched a consultation looking for owners' views. Transport Secretary Mark Harper is calling on classic car owners to have their views heard ahead of the end date.

The consultation will explore whether there should be separate processes for classic cars, including the categorisation, tax exemptions, Vehicle Excise Duty and more. Speaking to GB News, Transport Secretary Mark Harper said: “One of the things that we said we want people to respond to in this call for evidence is about the whole registration of classic cars.

“So, if people have views about where that cut-off point should be and what should count as a classic car and what shouldn't, they should absolutely feed that back. I want to hear from GB News viewers. I want to hear from people who are enthusiasts. I want to hear from people that work in the industry. I want people involved in classic car clubs.

“I want as many people as possible to respond to the call for evidence so that when we set out the changes to the rules that we're going to set out, we have listened to as many views as possible and that we get it as right as we can.”

Mr Harper said previously: "The way we restore and protect classic cars has not kept up with the times and evolving technologies, which is why we are calling for industry and enthusiasts to have their say on how to best protect these British classics for decades to come.

"Alongside our record £8.3 billion increase to resurface local roads and the 30-point Plan for Drivers, today’s call for evidence is the latest part of the government’s plan to back drivers, support skilled jobs, and grow the economy."
