Drying clothes in the winter can be a challenge. The weather is often unpredictable and you may not want to risk hanging your washing outside so many people choose to dry items indoors.

Airing clothes indoors is the only option for many, especially people who don't own a tumble dryer but this may cause issues such as damp smelling clothes if not done properly. And when it comes to washing bigger items such as towels and bedding you may struggle for space to spread them.

A cleaning expert has offered advice on social media. Lynsey Crombie, also known as the Queen of Clean, says you can slash the drying time by using one simple trick. According to the expert, taking one extra step while your laundry is in the washing machine can speed up the time it takes for your belongings to dry.

In a TikTok video viewed by over 30k people, she said: "Don't forget guys, at this time of year when you've finished washing your towels and bedding, make sure you leave it in, turn your dial and give it an extra spin.

"It's only going to take 10 minutes, but it's going to make a massive difference to your drying time." The clip was only short but people took to the comments to share their experience of trying the hack.

Jacqueline said: "I do this after your advice Lyndsey at it definitely does make a difference" and Graeme added "I do 2 extra spin cycles. It makes such a difference!" Others responded "I always give it a extra spin" and "I do a spin and drain as I find a lot of stuff dries quicker."

Fabric softener brand Lenor has also issued tips on how to dry clothes in the winter. A simple piece of advice they offer and one which is probably one we are all guilty of is to not overfill washing machines. Squashing clothes into the machine until there is no room left and we are struggling to close the door is not a good sign. It can actually leave them damper at the end of the wash and will take longer to dry.

Giving laundry a good spin and extra shake when removing it from the washing machine to help remove water had been recommended by Lenor. They advise where possible you should use the machine’s fastest spin cycle to help extracting water but be sure to check labels as some clothes are delicate.
