Football fans have reacted angrily to the decision to 'axe' Clive Tyldesley from Euro 2024, despite there being two weeks of the tournament still to go, with the decision to send the popular commentator home branded a 'disgrace.'

It was Clive himself who went on the record earlier this week to reveal that ITV wouldn't be renewing his contract after 28 years of working for the broadcaster and, to rub salt into the wounds, he was seemed surplus to requirements after working for Germany v Denmark on Saturday.

Speaking about his upset over the decision, Clive said: ""It's a shame it's coming to an end but it's a matter of opinion and their opinion is that this is the right call. I don't know why they think that. I've never fully understood but I have to accept it. I still think my work is strong enough to resonate with old and young."

It was the job of ITV's Euro 2024 presenter Mark Pougatch to officially confirm Clive's exit to viewers at home, paying a brief tribute to one of the most recognisable voices in football, before a montage of highlights from major tournaments played out on screen.

And as the clips aired, plenty of irate took to X to lambast ITV for getting rid of Clive. One ranted: "ITV are an absolute disgrace getting rid of Clive Tyldesley. Spineless idiots" as another, echoing the same angry sentiments, fumed: "Shambles. Why do they do this stuff? Let the man carry on."

Among the many other pots in support of Clive, was one that read: "...an absolute travesty that ITV don’t want him to commentate anymore" and another reading: "Every viewer with a brain cell breaks down why ITV have messed up replacing him with Sam Matterface"
